On the rare occasions that Walt Disney allowed sequels to his live-action features, they tended to feel less like continuations and more like extensions.
Good review. I love the Herbie movies but agree most are low budget affairs designed for fun alone. The lack of Dean Jones is always felt and, honestly, the lack of Walt is noticeable. It's always weird it's the same director of this who did the first because it doesn't feel like it. But it's got humor and fun. Kids I know, including my daughter, seem to like this one the most and I think this film perfectly fits kid-friendly. But that's what Walt loved to do - good family films that entertain while still being good quality. Sadly the quality suffered after his death as focus became on the entertaining side, but Disney with Walt and after knew how to throw a crazy fun time regardless. I'll take a lower quality but entertaining film over a low quality drag any day!
