Funny enough, I don't remember many kids talking about this movie at all at the time, but everybody was talking about THE LAND BEFORE TIME. So whether OLIVER beat it at the box office or not made no difference on my playground.
That makes sense. I had just started my second year of college at the time. I think the audience for Oliver skewed older than Disney had expected thanks to Billy Joel and Bette Midler's involvement. I don't even think I saw Land Before Time in a theatre but my friends and I were big Billy Joel fans, so we definitely made a point to see Oliver.

I just watched this movie for the first time yesterday. Not the best, but a good film with great music
